Magazine

Heritage Commercials magazine is Britain’s brightest full colour magazine for classic and vintage commercial vehicle enthusiasts. It celebrates the days when roads were still quiet and lorry driving was fun as well as hard work. But Heritage Commercials is not just about old drivers – its strong historical content looks at the various vehicle manufacturers, while it keeps up to date with the current preservation scene with stories of beautifully restored vehicles of a bygone age, and their owners, being featured. The magazine also regularly features light commercials – vans to you and me – buses and coaches, fire engines and military vehicles, as well as keeping in touch with the ever growing number of superb long distance road runs and events held throughout the year. This is living history on the move!

THE DRIVE OF YOUR LIFE • What’s the best make of ‘Golden Oldie’ to drive? Ask Bob Tuck that question and he’ll tell you that anything built by AEC stands head and shoulders clear of everything else from its era. Our man looks back at the selection of Southall’s finest that he has been fortunate enough to sit behind the wheel with. And he also daydreams about the many that have passed him by.

AND THE WINNER IS… • Starting in this summer, Manchester’s Walsh brothers attacked the restoration of a Series I Land Rover for a friend of theirs, Brian Owen. The Welsh haulier and classic commercials collector wanted the Land Rover as a 17th birthday present for his grandson, Ifan. The restoration is complete, but due to the pandemic, as you read this, Ifan may still be waiting for his present…

NOTHING ON THE CLOCK PART ONE • You see them here, there and almost everywhere. The modern day car transporter is so much a regular sight on our roads that we almost take it for granted. But as Ken Glendinning tells Bob Tuck, these finely engineered load carriers have evolved from the days when one man and his ‘plates’ was the established method of new car delivery. Yes, it was only when the motor trade took to the idea of selling vehicles with ‘nothing on the clock’ did they accelerate the change of how cars were moved around the country.

CHRIS NEWTON ARCHIVES – FODEN

MARSHAL EFFORT • Joseph Lewis discovers the restoration of a Somerset family’s 1970 AEC Marshal, after languishing for 15 years.

‘BELINDA’ THE LEYLAND CUB FK6 FIRE ENGINE • There aren’t many octogenarians racing around the roads having been born in the mid-30s, but ‘Belinda’ is one of them. Mike and Julie Blenkinsop talk to veterans and the owner of an 80-year-old fire appliance which has returned to its roots.

Militant special

THE DEVELOPMENT OF UK WASTE MANAGEMENT LTD (UK WASTE’S) DRY WASTE COLLECTION BUSINESS ACROSS THE UK LATE 1980S-1990S • In 1968, Waste Management Inc. (WMX Technologies, Inc.) was founded in Chicago. During this period, a joint venture company was formed in the UK with Wessex Water Services Ltd forming UK Waste Management Ltd better known as (UK Waste) as Timothy Byrne explains.

SCAMMELL SHOWTRAC SCAMMELL 100 YEARS OLD • 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Scammell, one of the most illustrious names in British commercial vehicle history.
